Sunspot numbers and proton events in solar cycles 19 to 24

چکیده

In this study we compare the mean annual sunspot numbers for six most recent solar cycles (19 to 24) with number of energetic proton events occurring in those years. Though individual exhibit quite strong correlations, when they are combined into a generic cycle result is very significant (ρ = 0.98). For 21 24 (when spacecraft observations have been regularly available), also investigate variation source location relation four peak flux thresholds orders magnitude from ≥10 ≥10,000 pfu. helio-latitudes within ±40° (the range which active regions usually occur) there negligible helio-longitude regardless threshold. However, effect on varying threshold significant: higher closer median longitude 0°, being almost uniform pfu (32°W) (2°W). Finally, 10 19 pfu, all occurred between years 4 and 8 after minimum, were M- or X-class flares associated halo CMEs shock fronts, three intense (≥40,000 pfu) related 10–28°E. These results support extend previous work by cited authors, implications solar-terrestrial relations effects space weather geospace.

The sunspot cycle no. 24 in relation to long term solar activity variation

The solar minimum between solar cycles 23 and 24 during the period 2007-2009 has been the longest and deepest one at least since for the last 100 years. We suggest that the Sun is going to his next supercenturial minimum. The main aim of this paper is to tell about arguments concerning this statement. They are based on series of studies, which have been provided during the period since 1997 up ...

Solar Wind Plasma Parameter Variability Across Solar Cycles 23 and 24: From Turbulence to Extremes

Solar wind variability spans a wide range of amplitudes and timescales, from turbulent fluctuations to the 11 year solar cycle. We apply the data quantile-quantile (DQQ) method to NASA/Wind observations spanning solar cycles 23 and 24, to study how the uniqueness of each cycle maximum and minimummanifests in the changing statistical distribution of plasma parameters in fast and slow solar wind....

Periodicities in Solar Flare Occurrence: Analysis of Cycles 19–23

Mid-range periodicities in solar flare occurrence have been analyzed with new methods for cycles 19–23. During cycle 23, periodicities of 129-d and 33.5-d were in operation. Five episodes of high activity occurred periodically with the 129-d period. The 33.5-d periodicity mainly operated for energetic flares. Results for cycles 19–21 are generally in agreement with previous analyses. For cycle ...

Origin of grand minima in sunspot cycles.

One of the most striking aspects of the 11-year sunspot cycle is that there have been times in the past when some cycles went missing, a most well-known example of this being the Maunder minimum during 1645-1715. Analyses of cosmogenic isotopes ((14)C and (10)Be) indicated that there were about 27 grand minima in the last 11,000 yrs, implying that about 2.7% of the solar cycles had conditions a...

Objective Calibration of Sunspot Numbers

Waldmeier [1971] found a very tight relationship between the F10.7 solar radio flux and the sunspot number and suggested using the flux for an objective calibration of the sunspot number. He suggested that if this relationship changed later on, the sunspot number should be recalibrated, assuming that the calibration must have drifted with time. I repeat his analysis using data up to the present...
